Introduction : Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the body's immune system. Two types of HIV have been characterized: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is more virulent and more infective than HIV-2, and is the cause of the majority of HIV infections globally. HIV-1 is a retrovirus, belonging to a group of heterogeneous, lipid-enveloped RNA viruses. The virus infects CD4-positive T cells and macrophages, and dendritic cells. The infection leads to low levels of CD4+ cells and loss of cell-mediated immunity. Over time, they cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Alternative Names : Human immunodeficiency virus 1; HIV1; HIV1-ADA; Envelope glycoprotein; env; gp160
Virus Strain : Strain ADA clone AD8
