Target Region : 2621-3701
Introduction : Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the body's immune system. Two types of HIV have been characterized: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is more virulent and more infective than HIV-2, and is the cause of the majority of HIV infections globally. HIV-1 is further classified into four groups; M, N, O and P. Of these, group M is the most widespread worldwide. Group M is divided into nine distinct clades; A, B, C, D, F, G, H, J and K. Clade B is the most widespread HIV-1 variant. HIV-1 is a retrovirus, belonging to a group of heterogeneous, lipid-enveloped RNA viruses. The HIV infection leads to low levels of CD4+ cells and loss of cell-mediated immunity. Over time, they cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Alternative Names : Human immunodeficiency virus 1; HIV1; HIV; subtype B; clade B
Virus Subtype : Clade B
