Full Name : | Human polyomavirus 2 |
Introduction : | Human polyomavirus 2, commonly referred to as the JC virus or John Cunningham virus, is a nonenveloped double-stranded DNA polyomavirus. By age 10, most people have been infected with JCV, but it rarely causes symptoms. JCV causes a white matter disease of the central nervous system (CNS), known as progressive multifocal encephalopathy (PML); The disease usually occurs in patients with impaired cell-mediated immunity, particularly patients with HIV infection. JCv induces brain tumors of different histological types, including glioblastomas, and other tumors of the CNS in experimental animals. |
Alternative Names : | John Cunningham Virus (JCV), JC virus, Polyomavirus |
