Introduction : | Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a DNA virus from the Papillomaviridae family. More than 200 types of HPV have been recognized. They have been divided into 5 genera: Alphapapillomavirus, Betapapillomavirus, Gammapapillomavirus, Mupapillomavirus and Nupapillomavirus. HPVs can also be grouped to high-risk and low-risk HPV types according to their oncogenic potential. HPV infections do not cause any problems in most case. Cutaneous infection with HPV is very widespread. Some HPV infections can stay in the body and lead to complications, including genital warts. HPV infection may also cause more serious conditions, such as certain types of cancer (eg. cervical cancer). |
